OUR STORY

The Atlantic Rancher Company story (excerpt from debut catalog, fall of 1995)

Six miles off the coast of New Jersey is Long Beach Island, an 18-mile strip of beach separated from the mainland by the vast marsh that dots Barnegat Bay. From all the summers I spent there growing up, what has stayed with me the most is the solace of this island in winter and the power of the full-moon tide in September as it pushes its way up the bay against a stiff northwest wind. And the people. Those who worked the bay long after the vacationers were gone…right through the fall and often straight into the bite of the winter months. It was during this part of the year, I was sixteen then, that I became intrigued by the durability of an old cotton tarp, and odd thing I admit, nonetheless the beginning of a fascination that, years later, would become the founding idea for a premium quality, functional products company and the inspiration of a life’s work.

For many winters, I gunned from a hand-me-down Barnegat Bay Sneakbox, that of course, leaked like a sieve. I felt lucky just to have it to lie in and didn't much care how wet I got. At the bow, held to the deck only by a handful of brass tacks, was a canvas tarp meant to keep rain, snow and salt spray out during squalls. No matter that its purpose was completely defeated by the leaking hull, I was constantly amazed by the durability of that told tarp and its ability to withstand winters in the bay and summers in the musty crawl space under the house. All the while that old tarp never leaked, ripped or tore away from its makeshift anchor points. In 1983, I tracked down the original process used to make this unique fabric and have been developing, testing and perfecting its application for apparel, accessories and footwear ever since. Today, the Atlantic Rancher Company is the only company in the world to offer this exclusive and proprietary fabric...we call it DryHandle.

I believe that you can buy no finer, more durable, better-suited garments for the outdoors than those presented here. All our products start with a unique, functionally-oriented, comfortable materials that, like DryHandle, transform even the most common idea into one of enduring value and functional elegance. You’ll recognize this standard not just in our distinguished DryHandle outerwear, but in everything we make…from our Rancher Hat of 12oz. SuperDux cotton to our ChainMail shirts and pants. Each idea is developed individually to meet a specific need, not to fill a slot in a “collection”, and each is “built with the usefulness and integrity of a knot tied right.” I am confident that our passion for functional ideas that are executed to a standard of quality and value, rather than price, will be evident in every product we make and that each will meet or exceed your expectations. If for any reason the promise of Atlantic Rancher Company falls short, we will humbly accept your return of merchandise for a full refund.
